A fragment of Timișoara’s old fortress wall, preserved next to the Ophthalmology Hospital, has been transformed into a new exhibition space after restoration work carried out by the Prin Banat Association. The place, named Cazemata 54, is located in a former travel agency office. It opened to the public as part of the Heritage of Timișoara: Baroque project.

Until October 19, visitors can see an exhibition by Dominika Wilk from Lublin – Timișoara’s twin city and a future European Capital of Culture 2029. Through illustration, the artist invites viewers on a visual journey through the history of Timișoara’s fortifications.

For decades, this wall fragment near the Eugen Bastion (in Piața 700) was forgotten. Next to the former travel office still operates a Loto-Prono agency that has been open for decades. On the other side, in the courtyard of the Ophthalmology Clinic, the space is used for storage. Facing Martir Radian Belici Square, a parking lot now stands where gardens once were.

The fragment survived the demolitions started in 1892 because it was part of the former Misericordian Hospital, built in 1734. The Church of the Misericordian Monks, now used by the Greek-Catholic community since 1993, also belongs to the same historical complex.
